Turf Master EnviroBlue™ germinates quickly, is low growing, and has a dark green appearance in spring that progresses to a bright blue-green color. It has many characteristics that set it apart from other turf. It is an excellent choice for low maintenance sites, even as part of showcase turf areas due to its low water requirements, low nitrogen requirement, and reduced growth rate. This blend typically persists in soils that are droughty, acidic, and infertile, if the soils are properly drained. EnviroBlue Blend™ also performs well in the shade with tree root competition and can be utilized in areas where many other turfgrasses will not thrive.
Golf Course roughs a problem?
Turf Master EnviroBlue™ made its reputation at tough reclamation sites where water and nutrients were low. It is an excellent choice when planted alone, or in seed mixtures for roughs, playgrounds, and airports where a dense, hardy turf is required. Turf Master EnviroBlue™ is a tough, blue-green perennial that spreads by short rhizomes. It is the right grass for water-stressed golf course roughs, airway strips, mine spoils and other low maintenance areas.
Why We Love This Grass

EnviroBlue Hybrid Information
In the 1990's, Dr. James Read of Texas A&M university successfully crossed Kentucky bluegrass and Texas bluegrass. He names the first commercially available variety "Reveille". Other seed companies and university breeders have since created similar hybrids.
There are a number of potential advantages to using this hybrid for lawn and sports applications. According to research at CSU and field observations from sod producers, this hybrid displays the following characteristics:
Excellent heat tolerance: This grass, in fact, seems to grow better the warmer it gets in the summer. Regular Kentucky bluegrass will generally decline under high heat (upper 80's - 90's) which can reduce its traffic and wear tolerance during the hottest times of the growing season. The Texas hybrid appears to maintain more active summer growth, which translates into better traffic tolerance and ability to recover from traffic injury.
Deep and extensive root production: These hybrids produce an extensive root system, which enhances heat and drought tolerance. A dense root system will also improve traffic tolerance, ability to recover from wear, and will improve footing (traction) in a sports turf application.
Extensive and aggressive rhizome formation: These grasses form large, extensive, and aggressive rhizomes (underground stems). Different than roots, rhizomes contain growing points that produce new grass plants. Grasses that produce rhizomes are beter able to tolerate traffic and will recover more quickly from traffic-induced wear; often without the need to reseed the worn areas. An aggressive rhizome system also means better traction in sports turf settings.
Low mowing height tolerance: Its excellent heat tolerance and aggressive root and rhizome formation characteristics allow this grass, when necessary, to be mowed at lower heights than many Kentucky bluegrasses -- especially during the heat of the summer.
Potential to require less irrigation: There is a good amount of anecdotal evidence to suggest that these hybrid bluegrasses require less supplemental irrigation than some Kentucky bluegrasses and turf-type tall fescue.
Less severe sod transplant shock: Field observations suggest that the sod of these hybrids may be less susceptible to the transplant shock that other turf species exhibit following the planting of sod -- especially if watering is not begun soon after planting the sod.
