Tips and Facts
There are three major areas of lawn maintenance to be considered that will have an impact on how much water the lawn will need. They are fertilizing, mowing and watering. Fertilizing
Healthy lawns need food. The main nutrient that lawns need is nitrogen,
usually 3-4 pounds of nitrogen per one thousand square feet, applied in several applications during the growing season. Try
Turf Master fertilizer and assistance.
Mowing
Best mowing practices will remove only one-third of the leaf blade
at a time. Mulch mowing is an excellent practice which makes mowing easier, returns the nutrients that are in the grass clippings
back to the soil, does not cause thatch build-up and will prevent having to put the grass clippings into the landfill.
Watering
Poor watering practices are probably responsible for more landscape
problems than any other single factor. The signs of a thirsty lawn are: 1) Footprinting – after a person has walked
across the lawn, footprints are still visible an hour or more later. 2) Color change – the grass color changes from
a lush green to a bluish-gray color. When you see both of these signs, it is time to water.
Environmental Asset Good news about your lawn: Front lawns of just eight average houses have the cooling effect
of about 70 tons of air conditioning, while the average home-sized central air conditioning unit has only a 3 to 4 ton capacity.
With up to 90% of the weight of a grass plant in its roots, it makes
a very efficient erosion prevention device, also removing soil particles from silty water.
Turf grasses trap much of an estimated 12 million tons of dust and
dirt released annually into the U.S. atmosphere.
Turf grasses help purify water entering underground aquifers by
its root mass, soil microbes acting as a filter to capture and break down many types of pollutants and releases oxygen into
the atmosphere.
A well-maintained lawn and landscape can enhance the "curb appeal",
adding as much as 15% to the value of your home.
