Fertilization is Key.

Plants need essential nutrients for optimal growth and recovery. Turf grass fertilization is a key component for ideal growth and performance of the lawn.

Nitrogen (N) often gets the most attention. Nitrogen release gives the grass a vigorous growth flush when applied. Phosphorus (P) is naturally abundant in soil. Applications are needed for new shoots to gain nutrients that increase growth quickly. New shoots cannot unlock what phosphorus is already prevalent in soils. Potassium (K) is the transporter, moving elements to locations in the plant for greater uptake of nutrients. Grass clippings contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Iron (Fe) gives the grass plants a deep rich green color and strength.

We suggest following a holiday schedule for fertilizer applications, keeping in mind sod type as some grasses will need far less fertilizer than others.

Holidays: February, Valentines – Pre-Emergent. Pre-emergent is very important on newly installed sod and established lawns to stop nuisance weeds from germinating.

April, Easter – High Phosphorus; with Iron or slow release with Iron and pre-emergent.

May, Memorial Day - High Phosphorus; with Iron or slow release with Iron.

July, Independence Day - High Phosphorus; with Iron or slow release with Iron.

September, Labor Day - High Phosphorus; with Iron or slow release with Iron.

October, Halloween - With Iron or slow release with Iron.

It is important to fertilize before the lawn goes into winter dormancy. This will make for a healthier lawn coming into spring.
