Is it too late in the year to install new turf?
No, it is not too late. In fact fall is one of the best times to install turf grass sod. We live and grow in a cool season turf zone. This includes fescue and fescue blends as well as Kentucky, Texas and bluegrass blends. Cool season grasses thrive in the cooler temperatures of fall.
Ground temperatures in fall are more conducive to root growth and establishment. Though outside air temperatures may be falling ground temperatures stay consistent which is good for new root establishment. Most active root growth occurs when ground temperatures are between 50 and 65 degrees. When soil temperatures are below 50 and above 65 root growth slows.
Now, near end of September through November is a great time to install new turf grass.
